Internet Trends Report 2016

I recently came across the Internet Trends Report put together by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), presented by Mary Meeker at the Code Conference. After looking through the presentation (213 slides!) I have summarized the most relevant points in this blog post.

Global Internet Users

  • Grew to 3 billion internet users in 2015 (it was 1.5 billion in 2008)
  • Year to year growth rate is 10% per year (it was 15% in 2009)
  • India overtook the USA to become the #2 global user market behind China

Global Smartphone Users

  • Grew to 2.5 billion smartphone users in 2015 (it was 0.5 billion in 2010)
  • Year to year growth rate is 10% per year (it was 75% in 2010)
  • Of all smartphones shipped in 2015, 81% were Android and 16% was iOS

Internet Advertising Trends

  • $60 billion was spent on internet advertising in the USA in 2015 (it was $26 billion in 2010)
  • Between 2014 to 2015, internet advertising on desktop computers grew 5%
  • Between 2014 to 2015, internet advertising on mobile devices grew 66%
  • Of the $60 billion spent, almost $30 billion was spent on Google and $8 billion was spent on Facebook
  • Between 2014 to 2015, advertising on Google grew 18%
  • Between 2014 to 2015, advertising on Facebook grew 59%

  • Print 4%

Advertising Dollars Spent on Media Platforms in 2015

  • Print 16% (BIG difference between ad dollars spent vs time spent on mobile)

E-Commerce

  • E-Commerce represented 10% of all retail sales in 2015 (compared to 2% in 2000)
  • 516 million people in China sent 32 billion virtual red pockets via WeChat (yes, that’s billion with a B) during Chinese New Year in 2016 (that’s a 900% increase from 2015).
